Episode 07: Miraculous breastfeeding. With Catherine Watson Genna.

I am so touched to be sharing this episode with you in which I am talking to Catherine Watson Genna about the miracles of breastfeeding. This is a topic which is so dear to my heart, and hers of course - and we both share great love for the fascination of human physiology and biology. It was a pure joy to record this episode for you. May this episode serve humanity to share the message that breastfeeding is so much more than the pure milk transfer from breast to baby! Yes, not only did Cathy share so many miraculous facts Cathy about breastfeeding but also invited us to explore chest-feeding as a fundamental process in the development of the child.  We explored thoughts of the so called nurture science researched by Nils Bergman who says that breastfeeding is the platform for future emotional and social intelligence of the child - wow!

Above all, I am touched to be reminded myself how breastfeeding is an invitation to listen to the intelligent nature our body is and reveal its wisdom!

About Cathy: Catherine Watson Genna, is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in private practice in New York City. Catherine is particularly interested in helping moms and babies breastfeed when they have medical challenges. She loves to teach, locally mentoring clinical interns and traveling to educate healthcare professionals around the world on assisting breastfeeding babies with anatomical, genetic or neurological problems. Her presentations and her writing are enriched by her clinical photographs and videos. Catherine collaborates with Columbia University and Tel Aviv University Departments of Biomedical Engineering on research projects investigating the biomechanics of the lactating nipple and various aspects of sucking and swallowing in breastfeeding infants. She is the author of various amazing books and journals, one of which: supporting suckling skills - the one I read and led me to invite her to the podcast.

In this conversation with Cathy we talked about …

  • Cathy`s journey to become a lactation consultant and what her work in private practice is all about

  • The amazing reflexes of the newborn to establish breastfeeding

  • Why breastfeeding is so much more than the pure milk transfer from breast to baby …

  • …and what it is what makes human milk so miraculous

  • Why the process of breastfeeding is an invitation to reconnect to our true nature and trust our instincts

  • How you can prepare yourself and your body for the process of breastfeeding

  • What our role as a society is to support breast- and chest-feeding parents

I hope you feel as energised and inspired as I did after listening to the interview with Helen and that it encouraged you to follow your very own path and to trust yourself and all the messages you receive from your body!
